ABOUT US

Fort William Historical Park features Fort William, one of North America’s largest living history sites, and the David Thompson Astronomical Observatory, home to one of Central Canada’s largest publicly accessible telescopes.

FORT WILLIAM LIVING HISTORY SITE

The living history site brings to life Fort William, the inland headquarters of the North West Company, the world’s largest fur trading enterprise during the early 19th century. This is a place where cultures meet and relationships are forged between Indigenous Peoples and non-Indigenous newcomers. Fort William stands on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe, the Indigenous people who have lived in harmony with the land for
generations. The Anishinaabe share their invaluable knowledge, skills and technology with their European partners and trade furs for European goods. Travel back in time and experience this unique place and time in history through the eyes of peoples past, who lived and worked around Fort William!

DAVID THOMPSON ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATORY

Named after one of the greatest cartographers, the David Thompson Astronomical
Observatory is your gateway to the stars. The observatory offers out-of-this-world daytime, nighttime and overnight programs. The observatory also features a 20” Corrected Dall Kirkham (CDK) telescope, a collection of meteorites and authentic astronomy instruments used by explorers, such as David Thompson in the 1800s.
